Senior Labour Parliamentarians step up call for Labour to embrace a ‘People's Vote’
Addressing a rally in parliament this evening organised by the grassroots ‘Remain Labour’ Campaign, senior Labour parliamentarians representing constituencies from all regions of the UK have called on the party to show leadership on Brexit and support a People's Vote.
‘Remain Labour’ wants the Labour Party to back a People's Vote and commit to campaigning to Remain in the EU, a position supported by 86 per cent of party members. In addition, 83 per cent of Labour voters support remaining in the EU versus the government’s Withdrawal Bill (YouGov, Jan 2019).
Addressing a packed audience of Labour party members and supporters, senior Labour MPs said now was the moment for the party to come out in support of a People's Vote on the Brexit deal and break the deadlock in parliament.
Stella Creasy, MP for Walthamstow, said; ‘Don’t be angry, be active. As Clement Attlee said, the Labour movement is what members make of it and Labour members need to make their voices heard on Brexit.’
Owen Smith, MP for Pontypridd, said; ‘Labour will not win a General Election unless we are clear about our opposition to Brexit, economically, philosophically and politically’.
Ian Murray, MP for Edinburgh South, said; ‘Labour’s duty is to fight for the people who have the least and give them a voice. Labour can’t give them that voice, can’t eradicate child poverty and can’t tackle climate change by becoming poorer by leaving the EU.’
Andrew Lewin, founder of Remain Labour commented:
"We have come a very long way in the 12 months since Remain Labour was founded. Fighting to Remain in the EU is now the preference of an overwhelming majority of Labour voters and I hope and believe we will see the party leadership endorse a People's Vote in a matter of weeks.
A change in party policy can't come soon enough. Only the Labour Party can deliver the votes in parliament to secure a People's Vote. Only the Labour Party can lead a fresh campaign to Remain, which sees membership of the European Union as the foundation from which we rebuild the country."
The speakers who addressed the event were:
